Side Effects of Ashwagandha

Just as every coin has two sides, Ashwagandha too has its side effects. Although it is said that Ashwagandha side effects are virtually non-existent, there are some symptoms that have been observed in individuals during case studies.

The powder can be slightly hard to digest, and can cause some abdominal heaviness and flatulence, especially in those persons who have weak digestive systems. Occasionally there will be slight nausea or stomach upset when first taking the herb, whether in powder or liquid form. The relaxing properties of ashwagandha can sometimes be perceived as a slight drowsiness. Therefore, one taking any type of sedative medications should avoid taking ashwagandha until its effects are known.

Caution is the Key

Many herbalist have warned that individuals with certain conditions should avoid using ashwagandha. People suffering from diabetes, liver diseases, digestive disorders and ulcers should not take this herb. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid taking ashwagandha, as its safety to the fetus and infant have not been proven.

Ashwagandha side effects have only short, vague evidences that are not very conclusive. Indian adults, as well as children have been using ashwagandha for centuries, without any major problems. You should always speak to your doctor or health practitioner before taking any herbal supplement. One should not out weigh the risks and throw caution to the wind. Ashwagandha has excellent safety marks, and therefore with a little bit of precaution, most people can take it safely.

Evaluation Of Subacute Toxicity:

In a study published in Ind. Journal Of Physiologic Pharmacology from April 98, researchers assessed the subacute toxicity of Ginseng and Ashwagandha in rats. This study went on for 90 days and there were no toxicity in these herbs individually. There was significant increase in body weight, food consumption and liver weight, and improved hematopoiesis was observed. Brain, heart, lung, liver, spleen, kidneys, stomach, testis and ovaries were normal on gross examination and histopathologically. Subacute toxicity studies in rats did not reveal any toxicity.
