Jambul, Black Plum

Jambul, Black PlumSanskrit name: Jambu
Botanical name: Syzygium cumini
Habitat: A tree 20-30 ft. high with long, narrow, peach-like Leaves. Flowers, green-yellow in terminal bunches, blooming in July. Fruit red to black. Seeds oval 0.25-0.5 inches long and 1/5 inch round. It is found throughout the planes from the Himalayas to South India.

Energetics:

  • Rasa (taste): Sour, Astringent, Sweet
  • Virya (action): cooling
  • Vipaka (post-digestive effect): Sweet
  • Dosha (constitution): Balances Vata but may aggravate Pitta and Kapha

General information

Jamun or Black Plum seeds contain a Glucoside Jamboline, a Phenolic substance called ellagic acid, a trace of pale yellow essential oil, chlorophyll, fat, resin, gallic acid, albumen, etc. The berrylike fruit and the sun dried seed powder intake helps in glucose metabolism and regulates the sugar level in the blood. Black Plum may help in stimulating liver function, thus improving the digestive system of the body.
